Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) technology is the server-side component architecture for Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE). EJB technology enables rapid and simplified development of distributed, transactional, secure and portable applications based on Java technology. Despite several positives, the complexity of the Enterprise JavaBeans architecture has been considered as a sort of hurdle in the full-fledged adoption of J2EE.
The EJB architecture is however being constantly enhanced by versions released regularly so that the J2EE's promise of increased developer productivity thorough ease of development can be fulfilled. EJB 3.0 from JBoss makes another attempt at delivering that promise by reducing EJB's complexity for developers. The two most significant changes in the proposed EJB 3.0 specification are the use of the program annotation facility introduced in Java 5 and the new O/R mapping model based on Hibernate. Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) 3.0 is a deep overhaul and simplification of the EJB specification. EJB 3.0's goals are to simplify development, facilitate test driven development, and focus more on writing plain old java objects (POJOs) rather than on complex EJB APIs. EJB 3.0 has fully embraced Java Annotations introduced in JDK 5.0 and also simplifies the API for CMP entity beans by using Hibernate as the EJB 3.0 Java Persistence engine.
