Database Administration - MS SQL

Database Administration must ensure the proper storage of large volumes of data. The DBMS must ensure recoverability, proper creating and testing of backups, integrity of the stored data, security of the storage, easy availability of stored data, optimum performance, and development/testing support. Recoverability means that, if a data entry error, program bug or hardware failure occurs, the DBA can bring the database backward in time to its state at an instant of logical consistency before the damage was done.

Recoverability activities include making database backups and storing them in ways that minimize the risk that they will be damaged or lost, such as placing multiple copies on removable media and storing them outside the affected area of an anticipated disaster. Recoverability is the DBA’s most important concern. Integrity means that the database, or the programs that create its content, embody means of preventing users who provide data from breaking the system’s business rules. Security means that users’ ability to access and change data conforms to the policies of the business and the delegation decisions of its managers.


MS SQL uses a variant of SQL called T-SQL. SQL Server communicates over networks using an application-level protocol called Tabular Data Stream. SQL supports ODBC or Open Database Connectivity. SQL also supports the ability to deliver client connectivity via the Web Services, SOAP protocol. This allows non-Windows Clients to communicate cross platform with SQL Server. SQL today also has the capability by deploying certified JDBC driver to let Applications like BEA and IBM Websphere communicate with SQL Server.

SQL Server includes support for database mirroring and clustering. A SQL server cluster is a collection of identically configured servers, which help distribute the workload among multiple servers. SQL introduced support for .NET framework, thus converting T-SQL a .NET language. With this, stored procedures could be written in.NET, using the entire set of libraries available to the .NET Framework. Unlike other processes, .NET Framework hosted in SQL utilizes memory and thread management capabilities provided by SQL Server, rather than using built in capabilities of Windows. This enhances performance as resource management algorithms are tuned for the usage pattern of SQL Server, as compared to the generic algorithms in Windows.

SQL today has facilitated the development and deployment of a number of software development tools, designed to allow business applications to be developed using the data stored by SQL Server. Microsoft SQL now includes the common language runtime (CLR) component for .NET. Applications developed with .NET languages such as Visual Basic can implement stored procedures and other functions. The earlier development tools typically use APIs to access Microsoft SQL Server functionality. Rapid application development tools such as eDeveloper incorporate native database gateways for high speed database access and automatic table drill-down for the creation of quick prototype applications for viewing, editing and adding data to any table in the database.
