Database Administration - MySQL

MySQL is one of the most popular open-source database servers. With recent developments, it provides numerous features that make it competitive with the big commercial packages. It is probably the easiest database to get started on, and there is no end of examples in using MySQL with various Java applications. MySQL is a multi-threaded, multi-user SQL database management system which has won its' way through a lot of controversies and battles to be one of the leading DBMS of today. MySQL is owned and sponsored by a single non-profit firm, the Swedish company MySQL AB which holds the copyright to most of the codebase. This is similar to the JBoss model where the software is developed by a public community and the copyright to the codebase is owned by its individual authors.

Libraries for accessing MySQL databases are available in all major programming languages with language-specific APIs. In addition, an ODBC interface called My ODBC allows additional programming languages that support the ODBC interface to communicate with a MySQL database, such as ASP or Coldfusion. The MySQL server and official libraries are mostly implemented in ANSI-C. MySQL is popular for web applications and acts as the database component of the LAMP, MAMP and WAMP platforms and for open-source bug tracking tools. Its popularity as a web application is closely tied to the popularity of PHP, which is often combined with MySQL. Java and MySQL are good combinations and choice for both customers and developers.

MySQL works on many different platforms. In MySQL, multiple storage engines, allows the user to choose the one which is most effective for each table in the application. There are 3 types of MySQL Server Compilations, namely, Standard, which is the MySQL-Standard binaries recommended for most users and includes the InnoDB storage engine, secondly, Max binaries include additional features that may not have been as extensively tested or are not required for general usage and thirdly, the MySQL-Debug binaries which have been compiled with extra debug information, and are not intended for production use, because the included debugging code may cause reduced performance.

But as of now, there will only be one MySQL server package, which includes a binary with all functionality and storage engines enabled. MySQL is written in C and C++. MySQL today boasts of many standard RDBMS features, usually with the goal of trading guaranteed accuracy for speed. The much-publicised criticism is MySQL's divergence from the SQL standard on the subject of treatment of NULL values and default values. But the company claims that this divergence is not critical.

As far as the security aspect of MySQL is concerned, MySQL security is based on the Access Control List (or ACL) for all connections, queries and many other operations that a user can perform. It basically means that different users will have varying levels of access to certain databases and tables and that they will be limited to performing only certain operations. For example, a user with full privileges to a database will be able to perform a range of operations such as SELECT, DELETE, UPDATE and INSERT, while a user with limited privileges would only be able to use the SELECT operation and so on.
