Serverware - Java Beans

JavaBeans technology is the component architecture for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE). Components are reusable software programs that can be developed and assembled easily to create sophisticated applications. JavaBeans, which is based on Java Beans Specifications, is a component of the Java 2 Platform. Eventhough components like JavaBeans are self-contained elements of software that can be controlled dynamically and assembled to form applications, these components must also interoperate according to a set of rules and guidelines.

JavaBeans allows users to construct applications by piecing components together either programmatically or visually. JavaBeans more specifically, is an architecture for both using and building components in Java. This architecture supports the features of software reuse, component models, and object orientation. One of the most important features of JavaBeans is that it does not alter the existing Java language. JavaBeans components are simple to create and easy to use. Since JavaBeans components are built purely in Java, they are fully portable to any platform that supports the Java run-time environment.

All platform specifics, as well as support for JavaBeans, are implemented by the Java virtual machine. JavaBeans uses the existing Java class discovery mechanism. This means that there isn't some new complicated mechanism for registering components with the run-time system. The JavaBeans architecture also allows the developer to associate a custom editor with his component. To summarise, a Java Bean is a reusable software component that can be manipulated visually in a builder tool. The JavaBeans specification also defines them as reusable software components that can be manipulated visually in a builder tool.

In spite of many similarities, JavaBeans should not be confused with Enterprise JavaBeans(EJB)which is a server-side component technology that is part of Java EE. Further there are what is known as JavaBeans Conventions. This is because, in order to function as a JavaBean Class, an object class must obey certain conventions about method naming, construction, and behavior. These conventions make it possible to have tools that can use, reuse, replace, and connect JavaBeans. The required conventions are that the class should be serialisable, it should have a no-argument constructor, its properties should be accessed using get, set and other methods following a standard naming convention and finally it should contain any required event-handling methods.
