Serverware - Servlets

Java Servlet technology provides web developers with a simple, consistent mechanism for extending the functionality of a web server and for accessing existing business systems. A servlet is similar to an applet that runs on the server side without a face. Java servlets make web applications to its unlimited possibilities. They are small programs that run on a server. The term usually refers to a Java applet that runs within a web server environment. This is analogous to a Java applet that runs within a web browser environment. Applet/Swing-Servlet communication based programs can create mind blowing experience for user interfaces on web.

These method of communications are simple for the development, easy to maintain the codes as both client interface and server layer are pure java components and has a fast response for the http requests. Java servlets are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to CGI programs. The biggest difference between the two is that a servlet is persistent. This means that once it is started, it stays in memory and can fulfill multiple requests. In contrast, a CGI program disappears once it has fulfilled a request.

The persistence of Java servlets makes them faster and easier to use. The generated servlet content is commonly HTML. The Servlet API contained in the Java Package defines the expected interactions of a web container and a servlet. A servlet is really an object that receives a request and generates a response based on the request. The API package defines HTTP subclasses of the generic servlet request and response between a server and a client.

Servlets are generally packaged in the WAR files as a web applications. Moreover, servlets can be generated automatically by Java Server Pages (JSP). Often servlets are used in conjunction with JSPs in a pattern called model 2 which is a part of the model-view-controller pattern.
